The Discovery Loop

A practical framework for navigating the uncertainty of AI product development without losing momentum or direction.

The Discovery Loop

After studying dozens of AI product teams, we've distilled their best practices into a repeatable framework we call the Discovery Loop.

The Four Stages

The Discovery Loop consists of four stages that teams cycle through continuously: Sense, Frame, Build, and Learn. Unlike linear product development, this loop is designed to be repeated rapidly—sometimes multiple times per week.

Sense is about absorbing signals from users, technology, and the market without immediately trying to categorize them. The best teams maintain dedicated "sensing" rituals—weekly user calls, daily model experiments, monthly trend reviews.

Frame: The Critical Middle Step

Framing is where most teams stumble. It's the act of taking raw signals and forming them into testable hypotheses. A good frame is specific enough to build against but loose enough to allow surprise.

Bad frame: "Users want AI-powered search." Good frame: "Users abandon search when results require more than two clicks to evaluate—can we surface the answer directly?"

Build and Learn

The Build phase is intentionally constrained. We recommend 3-5 day build cycles—long enough to create something real, short enough to prevent over-investment in unvalidated ideas.

Learning is not just reviewing metrics. It's structured reflection on what surprised you, what confirmed your assumptions, and what new questions emerged. The best teams document their learnings in a shared "Discovery Journal" that becomes institutional knowledge over time.
